Spanish Supercup: Atlético stopped by Athletic Bilbao and Nico Williams

The Basques conceded the first goal, on a header from Joao Felix who hit the foot of the right post and the back of Unai Simon before entering the cage (62nd), but changed the match in four minutes, with a header from Yeray Alvarez (77th) and a recovery from young Nico Williams (81st) at the end of the match.

In the aftermath of Wednesday’s thrilling clasico in the Saudi desert, the second semi-final of the Supercopa did not disappoint and once again wrote a crazy scenario.

Atlético Madrid, reigning Spanish champion, and Athletic Bilbao, winner of the Spanish Super Cup in January 2021 in Seville against Barça (3-2 ap) and finalist of the Copa del Rey also against the Catalans (4-0), were neutralized for more than an hour … and the meeting was defused in the last quarter of an hour.

History of corners

Joao Felix, aligned from the start by Diego Simeone alongside Angel Correa (preferred to Luis Suarez, in particular), opened the scoring of a lucky goal: the fall of a corner from Thomas Lemar, the head of the prodigy Portuguese force their way into the Basque goal, after a misunderstanding between Yeray Alvares and the goalkeeper of Roja Unai Simon.

But the Basque defender will make up for it a few minutes later: two minutes after the first goal, in the 64th, Yeray, from the head, forces Jan Oblak to put out a high class parade on his line. And in the 77th, still on a corner from his captain Iker Muniain, Yeray sets the sights: he wins in the air between Renan Lodi and captain rojiblanco Koke, and manages to deceive Oblak.

It was definitely the set pieces that decided the fate of this second semi-final. Three minutes after the Basque equalizer, Nico Williams again alerts Oblak, after being found in the box by his brother Iñaki. And a minute later, in the 81st, the young Basque nugget (19) will also manage to beat the Slovenian goalkeeper, by slipping a recovery at ground level and small net, following a rejected corner.

It is therefore the defending champion who will have the right to defend his crown against Real Madrid, Sunday at 7:30 p.m. (Paris time) in Riyadh. And which in the process inflicts an additional brake on Atlético’s season.
