VfB Stuttgart still made it on the last day of the game and will remain in the Bundesliga for another year. What happens now?

After the successful rescue on the last day of the game, spontaneity was required at VfB Stuttgart. That applied to the end-of-season party on Saturday evening as well as to the players’ holiday plans. Even in the club, you had to reckon with an extension of the season through two relegation games until the very end. The dates have become obsolete after the 2-1 win against 1. FC Köln and the simultaneous loss of Hertha BSC at Borussia Dortmund. The white-red entourage is now saying goodbye to vacation.

Because of the Winter World Cup, the Bundesliga starts earlier

Pellegrino Matarazzo is expected to invite his men back to the training ground in mid-June. He did not want to give a specific date on Saturday. The preparations for the 2022/23 season, which begins on the last weekend in July with the first round of the DFB Cup, will take around six weeks. From August 5th to 7th, the first Bundesliga match day is on the agenda.

What will become of Sosa, Kalajdzic and Co?

Those responsible for sport will quickly review the past season and draw their lessons from it. Sports director Sven Mislintat had announced this several times. In particular, his squad planning with a view to next season will be questioned. It is important to achieve a transfer surplus of 20 million euros and at the same time to redesign the team to be ready for the Bundesliga. Some departures cannot be prevented, above all by Sasa Kalajdzic and Borna Sosa. A change from Orel Mangala is also considered conceivable.

Mavropanos is committed – but will he stay with VfB?

In the case of Konstantinos Mavropanos, VfB will exercise the purchase option for EUR 3 million and sign the defender on a permanent basis from Arsenal London. Which does not necessarily mean that the Greek will continue to wear the jersey with the chest ring in the future. A resale is conceivable, even if VfB would like to keep the Greek. Tiago Tomas is on loan until the summer of 2023 – only then will a permanent commitment become an issue.

Didavi and Thommy before farewell

Omar Marmoush (on loan from VfL Wolfsburg) will return to his home club as agreed. Darko Churlinov (on loan to FC Schalke) has stated that he wants to stay at Schalke. It is unclear at this point in time whether other loan players such as Philipp Klement (SC Paderborn) will return to VfB after the season. Daniel Didavi and Erik Thommy almost certainly played their last game in VfB jerseys. You will not receive a new contract.
