ANTWERP LIVE. 3x3 Lions are ready for the World Cup at Groenplaats: “There is no prize money, we do this for the honour”

Today the Crelan Fiba 3×3 World Cup starts at the Groenplaats in Antwerp. The 3×3 Lions, our men’s national team, is ready to fight for a podium finish. Although the sport is too unpredictable to make big statements now, says captain Nick Celis.

Slovenia and Egypt, those are the opponents of our Lions today. Nick Celis calls them “two lesser gods in the group”, although that does not mean that his team is sure of victory. “Every match is unpredictable, especially now that they have been shortened. You should never go into it with the idea that you will win. But on paper they are slightly less. The later opponents, Austria and the US, are ranked higher.”

Celis certainly hopes to make it past the group stage and into the quarterfinals. “It’s a dream to get a podium place, but I don’t want to pin myself on that. Matches are so close in 3X3, often victory depends on one basket.”

Win or not, a big check is certainly not attached to it. “There is no prize money in the professional circuit. We also receive no wages or compensation. We are doing this purely for honor and to put our sport on the map.”
