Cycling history written by 21-year-old Biniam Girmay. The Eritrean beat Christophe Laporte in the sprint. “Unbelievable, but time to go home, because I miss my wife and daughter,” said Girmay.

“I don’t know how I did it, it’s unbelievable. I just came for a good result, I can’t believe I can win this race. There were very strong guys with me so I was scared but in the last 250 meters I felt more confidence.”
“In the first section at the Kemmelberg I lost a lot of space and I didn’t really feel comfortable. But it got better and better, I kept following the others and in the end it worked.”
A historic cycling victory for all of Africa. “First of all, a lot is already changing for me and of course that we have a bright future for African cycling. I don’t think I will ride the Ronde, because I miss my wife and daughter. It’s time to go back home,” said a proud Girmay.
