Sports director of Spartak Luca Cattani declaredthat he had eight applicants for the post of head coach of the team, but the only convincing candidate was Guillermo Abascal. Cattani’s words are quoted by “Championship”.
“I had eight names. Three of them immediately refused to go to Russia, one was not allowed by his wife, three wanted money – just to make money, the other had a valid contract. The only person who gave guarantees was Abascal. I called him for 10 minutes, and our conversation dragged on for an hour and forty. He understood everything perfectly,” Cattani said.
The sports director of the “red-whites” said that the club “considered Russian coaches”, but he would not name their names. “Of course, I would like to see Klopp here, but for objective reasons he will not coach Spartak. I dismissed the coaches who put on slow football, we need pace, ”added Cattani.
Cattani appreciated the possibility of leaving Spartak if Abascal failed
Spartak announced the early termination of the contract with Paolo Vanoli on June 9, and the next day announced the appointment of the 33-year-old Spaniard Abascal, who spent the past season at Basel, as head coach.
The Red-Whites, led by Vanoli, took tenth place in the RPL and won the Russian Cup.
