Ceylin del Carmen Alvardo (Alpecin – Deceuninck) took the victory in the Aardbeiencross in Merksplas, the third round of the Superprestige. At the Kolonie domain, the 24-year-old former world champion drove away quickly and soloed to victory unchallenged. Denise Betsema and Inge van der Heijden completed the podium.

A bumpy course awaited the riders in the Noorderkempen, a mix between meadows, sand strips, technical forest paths, beams, bridges and even cobblestones. Don’t look for Fem van Empel, Puck Pieterse or Shirin van Anrooij, the three youngsters take a day off.

World champion Marianne Vos was the first to enter the field. Lucinda Brand – who completed her second cyclo-cross race after an injury – also started well, but after two mistakes in the first strips, she completely lost her way. A strong start, which also had the very young Fleur Moors. The Belgian raced from the rear to fourth place, but that was a bit too ambitious.

The experienced Vos had also left too quickly and paid for it halfway through the first round. She had to let Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado drive and completely collapsed. The way was completely open for Alvarado. She soon had a good gap, putting on a demonstration from start to finish.

Fruit weekend

Inge van der Heijden and Denise Betsema competed for the closest place of honor. They stayed in each other’s company until the very last round, but then Betsema pulled the sheets to herself. She was second, Van der Heijden was the third Dutch to take the podium. Unlike Vos, Brand fought his way back to the front and finished fourth.

After the Jaarmarktcross in Niel, Alvarado wins her second cross of the season, again in the Superprestige. With two wins in three motos, Alvardo also takes over the leader’s position in the standings. Merksplas was the setting for the start of a real fruit weekend: the Strawberry Cross in Merksplas on Saturday, followed by the Druivencross in Overijse on Sunday.
