The draw for this ATP 500 grass event endowed with 2,134,520 euros was made on Saturday. This will be the third confrontation between the Belgian N.1, 31, and the 26-year-old Russian. All three duels took place in 2019. Medvedev won the Australian Open and the Masters 1,000 final in Cincinnati, while Goffin prevailed in their only match on grass, at Wimbledon, at the end of a fight in five sets (4-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5).
Goffin returns to competition in Halle. The Liégeois had injured his left hip at the end of his second round match at Roland-Garros won against the American Frances Tiafoe on May 26. Two days later, a false move at the end of the first set of his third round against the Pole Hurkacz had aggravated the situation and the Belgian N.1 had finished the meeting on one leg, losing 7-5, 6-2 , 6-1.
Hit in the psoas, Goffin had to skip the Rosmalen tournament this week.
WTA Rosmalen: Elise Mertens makes it to the doubles final
Elise Mertens and her Russian partner Veronika Kudermetova, respectively N.1 and N.2 in the world qualified for the final of the WTA 250 tennis tournament in Rosmalen, a grass event endowed with 251,750 dollars, Saturday, in the Netherlands. The Belgian-Russian pair beat the duo of Japanese Eri Hozumi (WTA 40 doubles) and Makoto Ninomiya (WTA 38 doubles), seeded N.4, 6-4, 6-2. The meeting lasted 1 hour and 05 minutes. Kudermetova had just been beaten in the women’s singles semi-final. This did not prevent him from having an excellent start with Mertens, the duo making the break in the first game of the match. After a break (3-3) from Ninomiya and Hozumi, Kudermetova and Mertens immediately resumed the service of their opponents and, this time, did not let go of their advantage (6-4).
In the second set, Mertens and Kudermetova made the entry break again. A second break to lead 5-2 allowed them to serve to win the game, which they concluded with their first match point.
In the final, scheduled later in the day, they will face the Australian Ellen Perez (WTA 48 in doubles) and the Czech Tamara Zidansek (WTA 59 in doubles).
Mertens, 26, has 15 WTA Tour titles, including the 2019 US Open, 2021 Australian Open and 2021 Wimbledon. She also won a WTA 125K Tour tournament.
Mertens and Kudermetova, who have teamed up regularly since this season, have already won two titles together, last year in Istanbul and this year in Dubai.
In singles, Mertens (WTA 29) was knocked out in the second round by Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 46).
