Tears with spouts, Juan Pedro López cried after the fourth Giro stage. Initially because the 24-year-old Spaniard lost the sprint against Lennard Kämna, but moments later tears of joy rolled down López’s cheeks because he can start tomorrow in pink.

Juan Pedro López is the surprising new leader in the Giro. The Spaniard of Trek-Segafredo attacked halfway through the climb of Etna in the group that included Mauri Vansevenant. López would be blasting on and over Stefano Oldani in no time. The 24-year-old seemed on his way to the biggest win of his career until Lennard Kämna came up from the background. The German joined López in the final kilometers.

The duo seemed to agree, but López must have understood nothing of his competitor’s sales pitch. It was Kämna who sprinted to victory. López couldn’t stay with his vet – until it turned out that he took over the pink jersey. The Spaniard’s great sadness gave way to disbelief and pure happiness, which he shared with his teammates and carer.
