Cristiano Ronaldo wrote football history again on Thursday evening. Halfway through the second half, the Portuguese hit a self-enforced penalty kick against the ropes against Ghana. Good for the 1-0 for Portugal. This makes Ronaldo the first player ever to score in five World Cups. He thus distances himself from Lionel Messi, Miroslav Klose, Pélé and Uwe Seeler, who scored at four World Cups.

Ronaldo also scored at the World Cup in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018. The goal against Ghana was a huge emotional moment for the 37-year-old superstar. Just before the start of the World Cup, he ended up in a big row with employer Manchester United after a controversial interview on British television. That eventually led to a final farewell to the English top club this week. In addition, there was considerable speculation in the international media about whether Ronaldo deserved a starting place with the strong Portugal. Ronaldo did get that and during the Portuguese national anthem he emotionally shed a tear. The apotheosis followed with the 1-0 from the spot in the second half. Portugal eventually won 3-2 against Ghana.
