Gabigol ended up deciding by nailing the Copa Libertadores 2022 title for Flamengo. He repeated the feat of 2019, when with two goals, he turned the game against River Plate and led the Rubro-Negro to the Cup of the main competition of South American football. When scoring the goal of the game against Athletico-PR on the 29th, the scorer reached two expressive milestones.

Gabriel Barbosa is the first Brazilian to score in three Libertadores finals. He scored two goals against River Plate in 2019, leading Fla to win the trophy, scored in 2020, taking the decision against Palmeiras to extra time and scored the winning goal against Hurricane next year.

Gabigol also equaled Luizão, in Liberta’s historic artillery. Now both share the status of Brazilian top scorer in the tournament, with 29 goals. Luizão made his mark with Vasco, Flamengo’s rival, and made history at Corinthians. Timão owns the second largest fan base in the country, behind only Rubro-Negro Carioca. Gabi showed identification with the alvinegra shirt and revealed that he sees himself playing for the rival club Santos, the team that projected him in professional football:

“That’s true, I think I would match Corinthians a lot”, revealed the star when asked during the Altas Horas program, on TV Globo, about playing for Brazilian clubs.
