It clashed between Alderweireld and De Bruyne: “We are not altar boys”

This is one of the images of the evening. As Michy Batshuayi danced to celebrate his opener, Kevin De Bruyne and Toby Alderweireld both walked over to Roberto Martinez to correct the (many) things that went wrong in the nightmarish first half experienced in the game, by Belgium.

The two men had a fairly heated altercation. We can even speak of a shouting match, which Martinez attended. The national coach tried to calm things down and, fortunately, half-time came a few minutes later to put a lot of things back in place (including making two changes).

Courtois man of the match, four players in check: the notes of the Devils after the victory against Canada

“Kevin was upset because he had difficulty receiving the ball in the right spaces. Overall, we had a lot of trouble finding the free man”, explained Timothy Castagne after the match. “There are games where it’s more difficult and you have to stay together to go for the victory in the mind. What the Devils did.

In the mixed zone, De Bruyne and Alderweired returned to the incident. “These are football storiesexplained the first. There was space and we weren’t using it. Sometimes we are afraid and I don’t know why. I think we were looking too much for long balls but that’s the kind of thing that happens…”

Alderweireld was of the same opinion. “Football is about emotions. We had a difference of opinion. The three times we were dangerous in the first half, it was on long balls. We are men, not altar boys, and we talk about things. It’s not a small football match but the World Cup. It shows that we are involved and it does not matter. Everything happened really fast. We’ve already turned the button, that’s a thing of the past.”

Roberto Martinez, he played down. “We know that we have players who like to play between the lines when they are at their best. You shouldn’t see anything other than a desire to win. We didn’t play well and Kevin showed his frustration, it’s a normal situation. We will analyze everything in the next few days.” HASin order to prevent this kind of first period from happening again.
