Ons Jabeur (WTA 7) placed second on Saturday for the final of the WTA 1,000 tournament in Rome (gravel/USD 2,527,250). The 23-year-old Tunisian, the ninth seed, defeated the Russian Daria Kasatkina (WTA 23) in her semi-final after an exciting game of one hour and 56 minutes of tennis in three sets (6-4, 1-6 and 7-5) .
Jabeur will face the Polish number one in the world Iga Swiatek in the final. He has been unbeatable on the WTA circuit for a long time and took her 27th win in a row in her semifinal against Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 8) on Saturday. It was 6-2 and 6-1.
Swiatek equaled the American Serena Williams with her winning streak, who also won 27 times in a row in 2015. Only Justine Henin (32 wins), Serena (34 wins) and Venus Williams (35 wins) did even better this century. Swiatek won the last four tournaments in which she participated with Stuttgart, Miami, Indian Wells and Doha.
Jabeur is also in excellent shape. Her win against Kasatkina was the eleventh in a row. The Tunisian also won the WTA 1,000 tournament in Madrid last week.
It will be the fourth mutual duel between Swiatek and Jabeur. The Tunisian leads the standings 2-1, thanks to victories last year at Wimbledon (grass) and in Cincinnati (hard court). Swiatek made it in the first meeting, in 2019 in Washington (hard court).
Swiatek will go for her eighth WTA title on Sunday, while a third title is at stake for Jabeur.
