Kim Huybrechts plays phenomenal darts and humiliates world champion Peter Wright, but is short of final

The day started with a fairly easy win against Kevin Burness (PDC 125). Huybrechts threw more than 91 average on his way to a 6-2 victory. Then the Kempenaar faced darts legend Raymond van Barneveld (PDC 56). He also beat ‘The Hurricane’ 6-2, including two thirteen darts in the last two legs. In round three, Huybrechts was 6-4 too strong for the Pole Radek Szaganski (PDC 107), although it was perhaps his worst match of the day when he gave up a 4-2 lead and almost had to play a decider after misses on the doubles.

But the best Huybrechts had yet to come. He has not made it past the 1/8th finals this year, despite several attempts. But that changed on Wednesday. Against Damon Heta (PDC 19), who already won a floor tournament this year, Huybrechts averaged 104.68 on his way to a 6-4 victory. However, our compatriot was 3-4 behind, but finished the match with a twelve, fifteen and thirteen darts.

In the quarterfinals, Huybrechts faced world champion Peter Wright. But the confrontation did not last long. De Kempenaar raged through the game like a hurricane with a phenomenal average of 107.36 and wiped the floor with ‘Snakebite’. It actually became 6-0 for Huybrechts, Wright’s third ‘whitewash’ this season.

In the semi-final, Huybrechts took on Nathan Aspinall (PDC 18), this year already winner once and finalist at a Players Championship. And unfortunately for our compatriot the Englishman also had a strong day. He took care of 1-3 by finishing a 156, after which Huybrechts was always behind the facts. ‘The Hurricane’ did defend himself (he came back to 3-4 and 4-5) and again threw a strong average of 97.91, but had to give in at 7-4.

Huybrechts actually had the ‘bad luck’ that he did not compete against one of the other two semi-finalists. Scott Williams surprisingly beat Chris Dobey by an average of just 86.

The other Belgians then. Mike De Decker (PDC 62) had a good day and pushed through to the quarter-finals by beating world champion James Wade (PDC 5) 6-4 and the experienced Brendan Dolan (PDC 24) 6-3 on the way. In the 1/8th finals, ‘The Real Deal’ threw 102 average, but in the last eight Aspinall was too strong 6-2.

Dimitri Van den Bergh (PDC 9) had a lesser day than yesterday and already lost in the first round to Peter Hudson (PDC 84). Brian Raman (PDC 108) won a Belgian match against Mario Vandenbogaerde (PDC 102), but then lost 6-3 to Ross Smith (PDC 33). Geert de Vos (PDC 97) immediately lost 6-1 to Jeffrey De Zwaan (PDC 47), wildcard Kenny Neyens had to acknowledge his superior in Berry van Peer (PDC 88).
