László Bölöni, ex-coach of AA Gent, Antwerp and Standard, among others, launched Cristiano Ronaldo at Sporting Lisbon. The French channel RMC Sport lets the Romanian speak in a documentary about Ronaldo. When he immediately made a comparison with Eusébio after Ronaldo’s debut match against Moreirense – in which the 17-year-old attacker scored twice – Bölöni was considered crazy.

After Ronaldo’s debut match, his coach László Bölöni was interviewed by Régis Dupond of the French sports newspaper L’Equipe. In that interview, Bölöni said the 17-year-old attacker would one day be better than Eusébio, who scored 41 times in 61 international matches for Portugal, won 11 league titles, once the European Cup I and once the Ballon d’Or.
“My lawyer called me when he read my statements and said: Have you gone mad? Why do you say such things? Eusébio, that is like Amália Rodrigues (a famous fado singer). The queen of fado and the king of football. And you compare him to a child?†
To which Bölöni replied: “Yes, but if all goes well, this child can overtake him.”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or five times, the Champions League five times, seven national titles, became European champion with Portugal and scored 115 times in 186 international matches.
