MotoGP: Johann Zarco takes pole position at the British Grand Prix

After six weeks of vacation Johann Zarco is the man in sight since the beginning of the tests of this Grand Prix of Great Britain. First in EL1, 4th in EL2 and EL3, the Frenchman set an exceptional time in qualifying to sign his second pole position of the season, the eighth of his career. He will start ahead of Jack Miller and Maverick Viñales, who is continuing his momentum after returning to the podium after a year in Assen.

“It’s good, it’s very good, declared the Ducati rider, getting off his machine. Silverstone is a mythical circuit and being able to be comfortable and fast there is a source of great pride. I gained confidence in the last session, I saw that I managed to turn in 1’58 with a lot of control, I just had to do a little more in qualifying, I’m happy. »

A new track record achieved by the first six drivers on the starting grid and a heroic Aleix Espargaro. The Spaniard suffered a big crash in the fourth session, a few minutes before qualifying. He went through the medical center who did not diagnose a fracture and gave him the green light to continue. The Aprilia manager wanted to leave it at that, but although limping the Catalan got back on his bike and was the first to go below 1’58, a performance that Zarco, Viñales, Miller, Quartararo and Bagnaia improved by away, thus forming the first two rows of the starting grid.

For Zarco, this pole start is perhaps a good omen in view of his first victory in MotoGP. In particular because Aleix Espargaro is injured and also because Fabio Quartararo will have to perform a long lap penalty, following his fall during the attack on Espargaro in the Netherlands. The driver from Nice prepared for it, during free practice he took the long lap several times, so as to find the best trajectory.

The fight between Bastianini, 8th, and Martin, 9th, will also be interesting. The two men wanting to show off to win the handlebars of the second official Ducati.
