Nepomniachtchi draws with Caruana in the second round of the Candidates Chess Tournament

Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi played a draw with American Fabiano Caruana in the second round of the Candidates Tournament, which takes place in Madrid.

Nepomniachtchi played with white pieces. In the first round, he defeated the Chinese Ding Liren with Black.

In another game of the day, the Pole Jan-Krzysztof Duda drew with Ding Liren, while the matches between the Hungarian Richard Rapport and the representative of France Alireza Firouzja, as well as the American Hikaru Nakamura and the Azerbaijani Teymur Radjabov are still going on.

31-year-old Nepomniachtchi is ranked seventh in the FIDE rating. The Russian became the champion of Europe in 2010, as part of the Russian national team twice (2013 and 2019) he won the world team championship. Last year, he won the Candidates Tournament, and in December, in the match for the chess crown, he lost to the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who has held the title of world champion since 2013.

The Candidates Tournament will end on July 4, with a tie-break to be played on July 5 if necessary. The winner of the competition will get the right to play against Carlsen in the match for the world chess crown.
