There he is. Vincent Janssen can finally call himself a Red. The 28-year-old Orange international signed a multi-year contract at Antwerp and comes from the Mexican Monterrey. The Dutch spearhead will compete at the Great Old with Michael Frey, the club’s top scorer of last season with 24 goals.

Janssen’s arrival had been in the air for several days. Yesterday and the day before yesterday he successfully passed his medical tests. Today the attacker again descended to the Tawny Owl, where he was given a tour. Talia, his Mexican-American wife, was also present. The couple tied the knot at the beginning of this month, so that Janssen, with the permission of national coach Louis van Gaal, later joined the Dutch national team.

For the official communication, it is still a while until all the paperwork with his previous employer is arranged. In anticipation of this, a proud chairman Paul Gheysens already posed with his brand new stunt purchase. A pose that was reminiscent of that image from last summer, when the wealthy man proudly took a picture with Radja Nainggolan, that other prestige transfer.

In addition to a generous salary, the presence of director of football affairs Marc Overmars and new-fangled coach Mark van Bommel, two compatriots with whom Janssen spoke beforehand, also helped in his choice for Antwerp. At Antwerp, the eighteen-time Orange international first competes with the Swiss Michael Frey. By playing football closer to home, Janssen hopes that his selection for the national team will be continued towards the World Cup later this year. On Monday 27 June he will start his new adventure at Stamnummer 1. Janssen will first enjoy a week’s holiday, just like the other Antwerp internationals Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Abdoulaye Seck.
