Olympic champion in Rio de Janeiro, two-time world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling Ismael Borrero left the Cuban national team at the competition in Mexico, informs BBC.
The Cuban national team takes part in the Pan American Wrestling Championship, which takes place in Acapulco. Borrero disappeared from the location of the national team, his whereabouts are unknown.
The Cuban Sports Institute called the escape of a 30-year-old athlete a manifestation of low discipline in the country’s sports system.
Borrero won gold in Rio de Janeiro in the 59 kg weight category, and also won the 2015 and 2019 World Championships. At the Tokyo Games, the wrestler competed in the category up to 67 kg, due to the coronavirus he lost in the second fight.
This is not the first time Cuban athletes have escaped in recent months. In March, members of the Cuban sailing team Laura Manso and Carlos Miguel Esposito fled to the United States, and long jumper Lester Lesky disappeared from the team’s location at competitions in Spain.
