The Premier League Cup may be of interest to a large number of spectators due to the lack of Russian clubs in European tournaments. This was announced to RBC Sport by the ex-football player of Spartak and the Russian national team Alexander Samedov.
“Personally, I am not against the revival of the Premier League Cup. A tournament will be added, which will be an additional opportunity to compete for another trophy. The tournament will attract Russian fans due to the absence of our teams in European competitions. Something needs to be looked at. And in such a situation, the Premier League Cup will be just to the liking of the Russian audience,” said Samedov.
Guberniev supported the idea of creating a new tournament for RPL teams
Formerly “Sport-Express” informedthat the leadership of the Russian Football Union (RFU) is considering the revival of the Premier League Cup in the format of the Champions League. According to the newspaper, in this tournament the teams will be divided into four groups – four in each – in accordance with the places taken at the end of the current RPL season. The top two clubs from each group will advance to the quarter-finals. Matches are planned to be held in the middle of the week, on the days when European cup matches are played.
The Premier League Cup was held only once – in 2003, the tournament was won by Zenit St. Petersburg.
On May 2, UEFA suspended Russian clubs from participating in international competitions under the auspices of the organization in the 2022/23 season.
