Mick Schumacher wants to score his first points in Formula 1 under the Florida sun. The son of the record world champion urgently needs to provide arguments for a long-term future in the racing series.

Miami – With a big grin, Mick Schumacher threw himself down a slide at the Miami Dolphins training camp. A few attempts at throwing the football, two more kicks between the goalposts – the Formula 1 driver clearly enjoyed this warm-up program for the premiere in Florida.

Before the US home game of his employer Haas, there was little evidence that the 23-year-old was under more pressure than ever after four races without points at the start of the season. “He has to learn to ride at the front. It’s getting tighter in midfield,” warned team manager Günther Steiner in “Welt”.

Zero points in the World Cup standings

In addition to Williams driver Nicholas Latifi, Schumacher is the only regular driver who has not yet scored a point this year. If the previous season in the uncompetitive Haas was expressly intended as a year of training for him, Schumacher now has to deliver results. The record so far, however, is sobering: 11th in Bahrain, 13th in Australia, 17th in Imola, plus the horror accident and the cancellation of the start in Saudi Arabia.

“We live and learn, we look ahead and try to do better next time,” Schumacher replied to the increasingly uncomfortable questions. Above all, the comparison with his new teammate Kevin Magnussen makes the son of record champion Michael Schumacher look bad. The Dane, who replaced Russian Nikita Masepin shortly before the start of the season, has already scored 15 championship points.

Magnussen (29) should help Schumacher to turn the tide with his routine as a driving instructor. “It’s great to compare yourself to him, he has a lot of experience. That’s very different from last year. And I’m happy that it’s the case,” said Schumacher in Miami.

In the sunny state of Florida, the young star just doesn’t want to spoil his mood. Schumacher has taken the USA to his heart, his family has owned a ranch in Texas for a long time. “My sister says the skies seem bigger in the US, and in a way that’s true,” Schumacher said.

Schumacher: “The points will come”

In the end, however, this sky darkened for Germany’s greatest hope for the future. The dream of many fans of the next Schumacher in the Ferrari cockpit has been dented. The Scuderia recently extended the contract with the Spaniard Carlos Sainz until the end of 2024, World Cup leader Charles Leclerc is bound for just as long. And Ferrari trainee Schumacher has to collect arguments anyway in order to secure his regular place in Formula 1 in the long term.

“Nevertheless, I remain positive. The points will come,” Schumacher told Sport Bild. The strengthened Ferrari engine and the renewed Haas give him confidence. As a driver for a US team, Schumacher also enjoys the special affection of the public in Miami. The best conditions actually for the first championship points in the 26th attempt. “Once he has overcome this hurdle, it will be easier,” said team boss Steiner. dpa
