Last Saturday, Bornauw missed the game against VfB Stuttgart (1-1), after he injured his back in the last training session before that match. At the beginning of 2021, Bornauw already struggled with his back. He then had to undergo spinal surgery in February. However, the procedure was initially canceled due to an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic. He then crawled through the eye of the needle and had to be kept in a coma for 24 hours. On a second attempt, the operation went according to plan.

The duel with 1. FC Cologne is a special match for Bornauw. From 2019 to 2021 he defended the colors of the club from North Rhine-Westphalia, after which he made the switch to Wolfsburg. Before that, he played for Anderlecht in Belgium.

This season, Bornauw has played 30 games for the Wolves so far. He scored once in that. With two days to go, Wolfsburg is thirteenth in the Bundesliga with 38 points.
