Grobbendonk managed to knock Meerle out of the final round. After the home team scored three goals, the game seemed over. But Meerle showed character and made the match exciting again. It eventually fell by 4-2 numbers, but not without showing a big heart.

“We had agreed to secure Meerle well and to get the defense in trouble,” said Ben Baeten, one of the goalscorers for Grobbendonk. “That worked out well, but at the same time we gave away too much ourselves. It went up and down until we got better at our game. Suddenly we found each other blindly and the balls flew in. To be honest, at 3-0 I also thought that qualifying was in. But we also had a bit of bad luck as Meerle scored after two failed crosses. We had to get back to work. Fortunately, that fourth goal came quickly and then the victory was completely inside. You also felt that with the Meerle players. We forgot a few times to finish the switch well, but the win was there anyway.”

Mission accomplished and a round further? “That’s how we see it. We were really keen on that qualification. We spoke internally in the group about this final round. It turned out that everyone wants to go all out for the promotion. In any case, the first step has been taken”, concluded Grobbendonk’s youth product.

Rens Van Gog scored two goals for Meerle, but that was not enough to continue a round. “Unfortunately we missed two excellent opportunities in the opening phase, including me. If we get there 0-1, we will definitely have another match. Now we gave everything away in minutes. One weak phase in the match resulted in the loss. We did everything we could to come back, but that fourth goal was too much. This is annoying though. Promotion was not a must, but we would have liked to have continued”, 19-year-old Van Gog nodded.
