Russian New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin said he believed in the opportunity to win the NHL Goalie of the Season award after meeting a little boy who dedicated a poster to him. Shesterkin’s words leads ESPN.

Shesterkin became the owner of the Vezina Trophy at the end of the regular season, in which he was the leader in the number of saved shots (93.5%) and the reliability coefficient (2.07 goals per game). The Russian has been playing in the NHL since 2019.

“This award means a lot to me. I didn’t think about her when I came to play in the NHL. But sometimes you admit that you might have a chance. I didn’t play in the first preseason game against the New York Islanders. One little boy, a fan, showed me a poster of me that said “Future Vezina Trophy Winner.” I thought – why not? We have a good team for this,” Shesterkin said.

The Russian was recognized as the best goaltender of the season in the NHL

Since the current criteria for determining the recipient of this award were established in 1981-1982, Shesterkin became the third Rangers goaltender to receive it, after John Vanbiesbroek (1986) and Henrik Lundqvist (2012), who was Shesterkin’s childhood idol.

Of the Russians, only Sergei Bobrovsky (2013 and 2017) and Andrey Vasilevsky (2019) received this award.

Shesterkin, 26, is the 2018 Olympic champion and a two-time world bronze medalist with Russia.
