Honored coach of the USSR in figure skating Tatyana Tarasova responded to the words of American figure skater Vincent Zhou, who said that the US team, after a doping scandal with Russian woman Kamila Valieva, should receive gold, not silver, awards for the Beijing Olympics team tournament.

“I am amazed at what coaches and leaders teach athletes, how to get medals not by skating, but by changing attitudes towards the Russian group of athletes. Our coaches and leaders teach you to win yourself, ”Tarasova said in an interview with RBC Sport.

In her opinion, if Zhou had been taught according to such canons, he would not have spoken like that. “How does he want? He didn’t win and wants a gold medal, it doesn’t happen like that. Outstanding medalists did not ask anyone for medals, they won them, ”the coach emphasized.

Zhou said earlier that the US team is ready to wait for the Olympic team medals that were not awarded due to the Valiyeva doping scandal for as long as it takes, and these should be gold medals.

At the Olympic tournament in Beijing, the Russians won the team competition. However, after the end of the tournament, it became known about the positive result of the doping test Valieva, made in December 2021.

As a result, the International Olympic Committee decided not to hold an awards ceremony following the results of the team tournament. This decision was due to the fact that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) made a decision only on the admission of the skater to the individual tournament, the arbitration did not consider the issue of medals. The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) is handling the doping test further.

The Americans finished second in the tournament, losing nine points to the Russians. Zhou with his free program lost to Russian Mark Kondratyuk and Japanese Yuma Kagiyama.
