Arturo vidal added minutes in the match Inter de Milan beat Juventus 4-2 to be crowned champion of the Italian Cup. In the midst of the celebrations with his teammates in the locker room, the Chilean team midfielder posted an image on Instagram next to Felipe Caicedo, from Ecuador, and took the opportunity to make a reference to the controversial case of Byron Castillo.

“Champions brother. This one is Ecuadorian”, mentioned the “King” in one of his stories, unleashing the reactions of users on social networks. It is a fact that said post was a hint about the situation of Byron Castillo, an athlete who was called up for the Ecuadorian team and who is currently in the eye of the storm after speculation of his false nationality.

As is public knowledge, the ANFP Chilean Football Federation denounced this event that could cost the Ecuadorian team the qualification for the next World Cup in Qatar 2022. For the moment, FIFA is already reviewing the case and perhaps, in the next days, it is determined what will be the opinion of the highest sports entity.

FIFA rules on the Byron Castillo case

FIFA announced on Wednesday its decision to “open disciplinary proceedings in relation to the possible breach of Byron David Castillo Segura” after the accusation of the Chilean federation for alleged false nationality of the Ecuadorian player.

The Chilean Football Federation filed a complaint with FIFA against its counterpart in Ecuador for the “use of a false birth certificate, false declaration of age and false nationality” of the player Byron Castillo, who would have been born in Colombia and awaits a rapid opinion of the world body on the subject.

But the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) rejected the complaint and assured that Castillo is “duly registered with the competent legal authority” and has “all the national documentation in order,” it said in a statement.

If FIFA accepts Chile’s complaint, Ecuador could lose the points from the matches in which Castillo played in the South American qualifying round, in which he won the last direct quota place in the region for the Qatar World Cup, and his place would pass to the hands of Chili.

“The Chilean Football Federation has filed a complaint with the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, in which it presents various allegations about the possible falsification of the documents that grant Ecuadorian nationality to the player Byron David Castillo Segura, as well as the possible breach of said footballer of the call criteria to participate with the national team of the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) in eight qualifying matches, “explains FIFA in its statement.

“FIFA has decided to open disciplinary proceedings in relation to the possible breach of the call criteria for the indicated matches. In this context, the FEF and the Peruvian Football Federation have been invited to present their positions before the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. More details will be published soon,” the text concludes.
