The installments of payment of energy bills are multiplying (Update)

Without having precise figures for the sector as a whole, the Belgian Federation of Electricity and Gas Companies (Febeg) confirms an upward trend.

But for TotalEnergies, requests for payment plans increased by 80% between December and March. The overall amount represented by the clearance plans has increased by 50% since the start of the year.

Engie also confirms an increase in requests. “They have more than doubled compared to the payment plans of the last two years, both in number and amount.”

Eneco says requests are increasing “little by little” while Mega points out that the number of customers who are currently on a payment plan has doubled. “But this only concerns 1% of our clientele”.

On the other hand, Octa+ indicates that between April 2021 and April 2022, the number of payment plans practically tripled “for amounts also in very strong increase”.

In this context, the federal energy ombudsman – who received a record number of complaints last year due to rising energy prices – pleads for an extension of the deadline for paying energy bills to at least 30 calendar days.
