The decision of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to temporarily suspend Russia’s membership in the ranks of the organization has come into force, President of the Russian Tennis Federation (FTR) Shamil Tarpishchev told Match TV.

“As it happened, it happened. The main thing is that no one touches our guys, they continue to perform individually. The executive committee made this decision earlier, and today the conference has confirmed it. It’s about temporary suspension. We scored 20% of the votes in support, theoretically, we could have done more, we needed two-thirds to do without suspension, ” said Tarpishchev.

On May 6, an extraordinary conference of the International Tennis Federation was held. His main question was the approval of the decision of the board of the organization to suspend the membership of the Russian Tennis Federation.

Now the Russian team will not be able to participate in ITF team competitions, and the Russian Tennis Federation will not vote at the annual general meeting of the ITF.

Russians and Belarusians now participate in ATP and WTA tournaments, as well as in Grand Slam tournaments without a flag and an anthem.

Also on April 20, the organizers of the Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament banned representatives of Russia and Belarus from participating in the tournament due to the military operation in Ukraine. The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) criticized the decision. Organizations called it discrimination based on nationality.

Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season, will take place from June 27 to July 10 in London.
