The latest 'madness' of Maté: a tree will be planted for every km. fleeing

Luis Angel MatAndalusian cyclist Euskaltel-Euskadipresented this Friday at the Estepona Town Hall his new ‘madness’. A solidarity and ecological action that consists in that, every kilometer that the crack of the Foundation walks on the run, a tree will be planted in a Sierra Bermeja affected by the fires.

The last initiative of Luis ngel Mat

“I wish I never had to take this initiative because that would mean that the Sierra Bermeja fire had not occurred. It was an unprecedented catastrophe in the province. An area of extremely high ecological value was burned,” explains Mat to MARK.

This year, LaVuelta stops over there (Peas Blancas). “It is fortunate that it passes through where the fires are. As a cyclist it is a source of pride, but also as a person from Malaga. Taking advantage of an international event to show our benefits is a unique opportunity. In addition, LaVuelta more and more goes beyond the merely sporting. This initiative was born in this context, taking advantage of the framework of LaVuelta and also in the current context with the problem of fires. We must create a social conscience regarding the environment that has more and more strength”.

Some privileged

Mat shows off his office every day. Reasons he has to do it. “We have the best stadium in the world. There are nice ones: the new Bernabu, Maracan, San Mams… but ours is prettier because we have one every day: Sierra Bermeja, Burgos Cathedral, Holland… But also we have a responsibility to take care of it because it’s ours. And that’s where the ‘Every kilometer, a tree’ initiative arose,” he adds.

A very interesting action that is born already with 300 trees. “Every kilometer of the next Vuelta in breakaway, I put a tree. At the beginning, lest I get sick, I fall or I don’t manage to catch a breakaway (which is not easy). I put up 100 trees, LaVuelta doubled it (200) and my team, Eskaltel-Esuakdi, put up another 100 (300). I think it is a very important action to leave a fair legacy for the new generations. We have to leave the environment the same or better than we found it.”

Great ‘partners’

An initiative that ‘El Lince’ wants to thank “first to the mayor of Estepona (Jos Mara Garca Urbano) and especially also to Javier Guilln and LaVuelta. Both have backed the idea from the get-go. They have given me ideas and means to do it. Hopefully this LaVuelta forest grows healthy and is a reference to leave it to future generations. Surely more people will join this initiative because we want a tree to be born for every kilometer of escape”. This new forest was already born with 300. Other years it reached 500 km of escape. How many did it achieve this time? “I don’t know, but for me it is one of my great motivations.”
