With 88 years of history written on its pages, the “World T-Shirt Atlas” is an ideal book for football lovers, especially those who are fanatics and jersey collectors. But also with graphic illustrations to attract the attention of those who do not have much to do with sports. Alexander Turner Y cune miller next to the publisher Planet They published the new book that has a predecessor in the “Atlas of Argentine Soccer Jerseys”, published four years ago. After a great job, a compilation of the historical jerseys of the national teams is shown. With more details, Miller spoke with Clarín and told details of the book.
“With Ale Turner we had done the Atlas of Argentine Soccer Jerseys four years ago, with the shirts of all the Argentine soccer teams that had played the AFA tournaments and most of the interior as well. That book did very well. They were sold as 12,000 copies and as soon as we finished it we said: ‘It would be great to make a World Atlas of National Team Jerseys with the World Cups as the backbone’“.
The book required a lot of research to be able to bring historical data from Uruguay 1930 until Russia 2018, for this the work put five writers into action. “We also included Pablo Aro Geraldesa specialist in national team shirts and the two guys who had done the journalistic production for the other, Seba Gandara Y Agustin Martinez, and that’s why we have five authors. It starts this way, As soon as we finished the other one, we already wanted to do this one”, counted cune about how the idea of creating this book came about.

A publication very rich in information that tells about the shirts that have been used in the different World Cups and how, over time, they have varied in terms of design and colors. Also emblematic football shirts such as the one from Argentina in 86 to one of the most striking, such as the one used by Nigeria in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
“The backbone of the book is the World Cup from 1930 to 2018 and then so that the jerseys of those teams that had never played would also be available, we made confederation by confederation, CONMEBOL, the UEFAthe African (CAF), there we put at least a t-shirt from each country and if that country had played a World Cup, we put another one that comes out in a continental tournament or something like that,” Molinero said.

Given the exhaustive work carried out during the investigation, they managed to collect 1450 t-shirts among all nationalities. Within them, there are sections such as rarities, selections of countries that no longer exist for political reasons such as Democratic Germany, burma, manchukuo, Saar, Zaire and Tanganyikaamong others.
“We went world by world seeing all the teams that had participated in each one, how many shirts they had used in those world cups, against whom and there begins a photographic search to know which shirts played. Then in the case of the oldest World Cups, in 54 somewhere around there, you have to work on the black and white photos with which it must be completed with journalistic investigation of stories and more because many times in the 30 there were many colored photos but not with the real color. Going to the chronicles of the time and we achieved all that,” he quoted Miller.

With a good reaction from the public to the first publication of the book that contained the jerseys of the Argentine soccer teams, they already knew what the path was and this edition was easier than the previous one. But of course this did not mean that it had a long production time. “We had an advantage Pablo Aro Geraldes He had made a very important compilation of photos of his entire life. The first Atlas took us two years and this one 10 months. Basically because we already knew how to do it and we also worked against the clock and because Pablo had contributed a part,” said one of the authors.

Always based on the jerseys of the World Cup teams, they were able to find other extra sections. Among them “rarities”. There they put “T-shirts with totally different colors with those who habitually wear those teams, African jerseys that have represented animals that mean giraffes, lions, rarely worn t-shirts, too borrowed for instance Boca’s shirt was used by Brazil in a South American, other tributes to characters for presidents. Especially very rare, of unusual colors,” said cune.
He added that it is a book that teaches a lot about sports and that it also has curiosities such as, for example “that the first Brazil jersey was white, red and blue or that sort of thing.”

But beyond these curiosities, when going through the deep investigation, they discovered situations that marked and gave signs of historical moments. “It’s a book that somehow gives you some knowledge or some historical, geographical context. For example, the 1934 and 1938 Italian World Cup jersey with fascism tapes, then you know something bad is going to happen and the second World War”, Miller said.
Women’s football is also within the sections of this atlas. “The Champions” is the section that develops the jerseys used by the world champion teams.
