The shipping police reduce their fight against drugs for lack of budget

There will be no more “big special actions aimed at undermining big crime phenomena”. Following a new round of cost-cutting measures, officers in the understaffed maritime police will have to limit their overtime hours to the bare minimum and will be banned from working too often at weekends. However, these shifts are crucial: they allow officers to carry out special actions at night and on weekends to fight traffic.

“We don’t understand that,” regrets Joery Dehaes of the ACV. “We have the impression that this government is pursuing a strategy of rotting and letting the federal police bleed out. Serious crime has free rein.”

Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) promised that she would plead with the government to obtain more budget. “But we cannot make up for a historic delay in a year and a half”.
