Thierry Neuville: "Not ready to take the same risks"

Leader on Thursday evening at the end of the aperitif special at Harju, Thierry Neuville returned to seventh place on Friday after a complicated first stage.

For once, no mechanical glitch on his Hyundai.

Unlike Oliver Solberg on the roof after 300m in the first special (arch touched, he will not leave today), the Belgian did not commit the slightest fault either.

No, it was on a regular basis that Ott Tänak stuck him for fifty seconds on the day yesterday. It hasn’t often happened to our compatriot to suffer the domination of a team-mate in this way.

But there was nothing to do: “I don’t feel confident, the rear moves a lot, especially in fast corners,” he explained. “There are full curves in my notes but where I relieve because I don’t feel comfortable. I don’t want to make a mistake. I try other settings each time I return to the assistance, to no avail.”

We have the impression of hearing the same refrain for eight years in Finland where he no longer managed to get on the podium with his Korean.

Unlike Craig Breen (third in 2021) and Ott Tänak, second here last year and in the lead this morning.

“I ride at my own pace,” he continued. “I don’t feel capable of taking the same risks as Ott on this type of fast stage.”

His second position on the road, behind Rovanperä, of course didn’t help. It won’t be much better today. And if it is rid of the threat of beginner Jari Huttunen (petrol pressure), it will be hard in these conditions to gain even more regular places. Can’t wait for Ypres in two weeks…
