Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced nominees for the organization’s awards in 2022.
In the Progress of the Year nomination – three Russian tennis players at once – Veronika Kudermetova, Lyudmila Samsonova and Ekaterina Aleksandrova. Brazil’s Beatriz Addad Maia and Australia’s Ayla Tomljanovic are also contenders for the award.
Russian woman wins WTA Finals for the first time in eight years
Kudermetova in the first half of the season reached the finals of three tournaments – in Melbourne, Dubai and Istanbul. She kept her form until the end of the season, reaching the quarter-finals or above eight more times, including Roland Garros. On October 24, she debuted in the top 10 of the WTA rankings.
Alexandrova won two tournaments (in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Seoul), finishing the season in the top 20 for the first time.
Samsonova had a 13-match winning streak on North American hard court with titles in Washington and Cleveland. She also won the tournament in Tokyo. On October 24, the Russian woman rose to 19th place in the WTA rankings.
Kudermetova, along with Belgian Elise Mertens, were also nominated for the best couple award. The tennis players won the WTA Finals in doubles, the Russian finished the season in second place in the rankings.
The nomination “Tennis Player of the Year” includes Pole Iga Sviontek, Ons Jaber from Tunisia, Americans Corey Gauff and Jessica Pegula, Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia and representative of Kazakhstan Elena Rybakina.
The winners will be chosen by representatives of the international media.
