This Sunday, the U-17 juniors from FC Schalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart will face off in the final for the German title. The last time this was 20 years ago.

The U-17 juniors of VfB Stuttgart are in the final for the national title. The opponent this Sunday is FC Schalke 04 (10.30 a.m., Parkstadion Gelsenkirchen, Sky and YouTube live stream). The Stuttgarters want to crown their sovereign season in the B-Junior-Bundesliga Süd/Südwest. Stuttgart marched unbeaten through to the season title, in the semifinals for the national title the boys of coach Markus Fiedler eliminated Hertha BSC in the first and second leg (1:0;2:1).

“Schalke will be a real chunk. But we are preparing well. I wouldn’t say we’re favourites. The form of the day will decide. But we will all be highly motivated and are already looking forward to it,” says VfB midfielder Laurin Ulrich. Against Berlin he shot his colors into the final with two goals. The captain of the German U17 national team also knows the importance of winning a title. “It would be amazing because of course we would be in the spotlight.”

For many players, the final is the path to professional football

Because for many of the players who are in such a final, the path to professional football is mapped out. VfB Stuttgart are in the final for the first time since 2015 (0:4 against Dortmund), for the 15th time in total (German record). The Swabians won seven times, including the German record.

The list of VfB players who had respectable careers and some became stars after winning the title is as illustrious as it is long: Bernd Leno, Sami Khedira, Andreas Beck, Serdar Tasci, Timo Baumgartl, Adrian Grbic, Marius Funk, Pascal Breier, Kevin Kuranyi, Tobias Rathgeb, Andreas Hinkel, just to name a few.
