Leroy Sané is out for the German national team’s World Cup opener against Japan. The Bayern star suffers from knee problems.

Doha – The German national team must in their opening game at the World Cup 2022 against Japan on Wednesday (2 p.m., Broadcast dates of the DFB team) on Leroy Sane waive. The Munich offensive player is not available against the four-time Asian champions due to knee problems.

This was shared by the German Football Association (DFB) on the Tuesday before the final training session. The remaining 25 players of the squad took part in the session in Al-Shamal. For the media, however, only the warm-up phase of the first 15 minutes was visible.

World Cup 2022: Sané is injured against Japan – who will replace the Bayern star?

Sané remains unlucky in the national team. At the World Cup four years ago, despite outstanding performances for Manchester City in the Premier League, he was passed over by ex-national coach Jogi Löw and was not nominated for the World Cup. The 26-year-old from Essen, who has already played 48 international matches (eleven goals) for Germany, must therefore continue to wait for his first World Cup appearance.

After lunch, the four-time world champion makes his way to Qatar’s capital, Doha, where captain Manuel Neuer and Co. will spend the night before the game at the five-star Hotel Dusit. On Tuesday evening, Flick and Joshua Kimmich will take part in the final press conference (at tz.de in the live ticker).

World Cup 2022: Except for Sané, all players are fit

National coach Hansi Flick Due to the injury-related absence in the first group game, he no longer has the option of relying entirely on the in-form Bayern block. Sané was expected on the offensive. It is questionable whether Flick will rely on World Cup veteran Thomas Müller right at the start of the tournament after his long break from competition. Other alternatives for Sané would be Mario Götze, Julian Brandt and Jonas Hofmann, but also Kai Havertz if he is not needed in the storm center.

In midfield it is also exciting whether Flick decides for Ilkay Gündogan from Manchester City or Bayern player Leon Goretzka as a sideman of Munich’s Joshua Kimmich. After an injury break, defender Antonio Rüdiger is fit and ready to play for the German team again in time for the start of the World Cup. There have recently been headlines about the German team as well as off the field – Manuel Neuer does not wear a “One Love” captain’s armband at the start against Japan. (ck/dpa/sid)
