VfB Stuttgart is facing an unusual season – due to an unusually long break in winter and renovation work in their own stadium.

It’s a demanding task that awaits VfB Stuttgart on the first day of the upcoming Bundesliga season: Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team will start the season with a home game against reigning DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig on August 6th or 7th .

The ambitious Saxons, with former VfB youth coach Domenico Tedesco on the bench, managed to get into the Champions League after initial difficulties in the previous season and now want to play for the top places in the table again.

The statistics speak against VfB in the opening game

From a Stuttgart point of view, the statistics are not particularly encouraging: In the Bundesliga, VfB are still waiting for their first win against Leipzig, in eight games there was a draw and seven defeats. Nevertheless, at Mercedesstraße 109, the desire to get started prevails.

“We’re looking forward to starting the season with a home game and the support of our fans,” says VfB sporting director Sven Mislintat, adding: “RB Leipzig is a big challenge that we’ll tackle with full motivation.”

Great euphoria – but also home games on a construction site

The euphoria at VfB after the emotional rescue on the last matchday of last season is great, meanwhile more than 20,000 season tickets have been sold. However, the fans also have to get used to home games on a construction site: the lower tier of the main grandstand will be modernized during the coming season and will therefore not be available to spectators.

A week after the opener against Leipzig, VfB will face newly promoted Werder Bremen in their first away game before SC Freiburg come to Stuttgart for the derby on matchday three. The home games against Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are only scheduled for the second half of the season in spring 2023.

The consequences of the Winter World Cup for the schedule

The game plan also has a special feature this season: Due to the Winter World Cup in Qatar, there will be a longer break not only after the end of the first half of the season, but after the 15th matchday in mid-November.

After the World Cup in the desert country (November 21 to December 18) and a subsequent short winter break, the Bundesliga will continue from January 20. For the season finale on May 27, 2023, VfB welcomes TSG Hoffenheim to their home arena.
