VfB Stuttgart won the game against 1. FC Köln during their trip to the USA. It was only a friendly game – but the joy was great.

Even in the dressing room of VfB Stuttgart after the game against 1. FC Köln there was “joking”, as reported by coach Michael Wimmer. Why? Because the team had won their first away win of 2022 against a Bundesliga competitor in Austin, of all places. Although the game during VfB’s trip to the USA was only a friendly match, the joy on the Stuttgart side was great after the 4:2.

“We wanted to perform well again and play football with passion. We managed to do that,” said coach Michael Wimmer, summing up: “We’re absolutely satisfied.” After four training sessions at the Austin FC site, the test match at the Major League Soccer (MLS) club’s stadium was the sporting highlight the US trip of both clubs from the Bundesliga. The VfB initially designed quite clearly.

Good mood for the long break

Although the weakened team from Cologne also had their chances before the break, the goals were scored by VfB, who played quickly forward again and again. Konstantinos Mavropanos scored twice and Tanguy Coulibaly twice to make it 4-0 at the break. “You could just see that the group had fun playing football together – and that they were good at playing football,” said Wimmer. And Sven Mislintat, the sports director of VfB, added: “It’s always good to decide one half so clearly against a good Bundesliga team. It puts you in a good mood again.” It didn’t get any worse when 1. FC Köln scored two more goals in the second half.

Because VfB had gradually rejuvenated its team, in the end all the youngsters who are on the USA trip were on the pitch. The Cologne team, who also used a few talents, couldn’t turn things around, which is why Sven Mislintat stated: “You go into the long break with a good feeling.” VfB won’t be back in the Bundesliga until January 21, so that’s it According to Mislintat, it was important “to go out with a sense of achievement”.

Nine changes after the break

By the way, the first away game of the new year is on January 24th. And at VfB, no one would mind if the year on a different pitch started the way the old one ended.

VfB started with the following eleven: Fabian Bredlow – Josha Vagnoman, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Pascal Stenzel – Naouirou Ahamada, Enzo Millot – Silas Katompa, Lilian Egloff Tanguy Coulibaly – Luca Pfeiffer, Serhou Guirassy.

After the break, Tiago Tomas, Juan José Perea, Thomas Kastanaras, Antonis Aidonis, Laurin Ulrich, Samuele di Benedetto, Lukas Laupheimer, Leon Reichardt and Anrie Chase came on. The two goalkeepers Florian Müller and Florian Schock and the injured Dan-Axel Zagadou were not used. On the other hand, Silas Katompa, who also had problems during the week, was able to play. “I wanted to brake, but he really should play,” reported coach Michael Wimmer.
