On this Wednesday night, the Corinthians beat Fluminense 1 x 0, at Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 26th round of the Brazilian championship. And after the victory, coach Sylvinho spoke about the team’s objective, which is to reach the G-4 of the competition, to win a direct spot in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.

We expected a very difficult game. We build a strategy on top of that. We didn’t want a transition game. We wanted to take that away and keep possession by playing on their field. In parts we did it, in others we didn’t. But it is a very important result. Again in the stadium and with the fans, it is clear that he pushes and helps a lot. It brings an atmosphere, a great atmosphere. The game is difficult, the championship is like that. We have the understanding that today we have made all the effort and we have the support of the fans,” he said.

And completed: “It wasn’t one of the most inspired days in the construction part, it was a divided game even in possession. We had the idea of possession, having breadth, playing with crosses, and with the opponent in transition. I do want to believe that at the beginning of the game we were able to open the score. But, anyway, we won and this is very important.”

And ended: “It’s a difficult championship. I understand that it will become more and more disputed. The games are at a very high level of competitiveness, the goals are starting to appear and the points need to be added up. We are working on building a big club with three pillars, which I have repeated. Athletes who have already won Libertadores and Mundial, young athletes that fascinate me and athletes who have arrived now to qualify the group. It’s a group under construction, very good, and we’re getting points. Happy to be high on the table, but we have to keep building to get the points. We’re going game by game, as I said on my arrival. Happy with the work so far, but we want to continue.”

Corinthians has 40 points, the same number of points as rival Palmeiras, and is in sixth place in the Brasileirão. The team’s next challenge is the derby against São Paulo, on Monday, at 20:00 (GMT), at Morumbi.
