Tadej Pogacar is serious about his debut in the Tour of Flanders (3/4). The two-time Tour winner absolutely wants to have another Flemish classic in his legs next spring in the run-up to Vlaanderens Mooiste. Within his team it sounds that Dwars door Vlaanderen (30/3) is a great possibility.

Dwars door Vlaanderen is held four days before the Ronde van Vlaanderen and is considered by many riders to be the ultimate test in function of the high mass a few days later. It is also the date that best fits into Pogacar’s busy schedule. On Monday, at the team presentation of Team UAE, there was still some uncertainty about the competition program of the Slovenian, but in the meantime the puzzle pieces are falling into place. Pogacar starts his season in the UAE Tour (20/2-26/2) and Strade Bianche (5/3). Afterwards, he defends his title in Tirreno-Adriatico (7/3-13/3) and closes his Italian calendar with Milan-Sanremo (19/3).

Then follows a short intermezzo in our country with Dwars door Vlaanderen and the Ronde van Vlaanderen. The day after Flanders Mooiste, the Tour of the Basque Country (4/4-9/4) follows, before closing the spring in the Flèche Wallonne (20/4) and Liège-Bastogne-Liège (24/4). Afterwards, the focus shifts completely to the Tour, where he wants to score a clean hat-trick at the age of 23.

The participation in Dwars door Vlaanderen must also be seen in the light of the Tour. Pogacar would like to use his passage in our regions to explore the cobblestone stage of the Tour de France. Even when a cobblestone stage was planned in the Tour in recent years, Nairo Quintana (2015 and 2018), Alejandro Valverde (2014 and 2018) and Romain Bardet (2018) went down to Dwars door Vlaanderen in competition form to get used to the cobblestones.
