The XIII edition of the Timbalaye 2021 Festival began this Tuesday on digital platforms, under the slogan Awareness of my Origins and to the rumba blow, heritage of the Cuban nation.
The YouTube channel of the Ministry of Culture, the Clave channel and the Streaming Cuba platform broadcast the inauguration, which featured the performance of various exponents of the genre on the island.
The first day’s programming included performances by the Rumbalay group, the Portador Obbá Koso group, the Cienfuegos Children’s Folk Ensemble, Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, Rumbatá and Pedro Celestino Fariñas, known as El Príncipe de la Diana.
The event, which will extend its virtual programming until September 17, proposes concerts and theoretical presentations that involve defenders and exponents of the genre from Cuba and other nations.
The rumba was included in 2016 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in the Representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The festival is an initiative that safeguards these dance-musician expressions with activities that unite communities and promote the memory of the African legacy and the rumba.
Timbalaye is a word that belongs to the Oracle of Ifá, of the Yoruba religion of Nigeria, and means firmness and security.
