Thirty-three Picasso Indians, led by Chief Buffalo Ben, are making the last group match in the Conference League against AEK Larnaca a summer trip. In anticipation of the Buffalos’ group win, they enjoy 23 degrees on the Cypriot beach.
“We arrived here yesterday (Tuesday, ed.), for most of us it’s a five-day trip”, says Ben Bundervoet from a sun-drenched beach where he devours our city newspaper De Gentenaar in good company. “Some of us come back to Lochristi the day after the match. I’ll be there too, because that evening I have to bake fries in the Papas.”
Ben thinks it is of course ‘very wise’ to chill on the beach in November. “In total, the Buffalos are encouraged here by 216 Ghent fans. A fantastic apotheosis of a very nice course in the group stage of the Conference League. We hibernate anyway, we are already doing it here a bit.”
For those who didn’t know yet: the Buffalos have already won three of the four European confrontations and drawn once. After tonight’s away game, they will have one more match at the beginning of December, at home against Flora. Not Merelbeke, but Tallin.
