Due to the pandemic, almost everything moved from the physical world to the internet: work, classes, the bank and even grocery shopping. And if the days of a new normal are now looming, it is more than clear that much of the virtual is here to stay. So much so that cybercrime rose sharply in the hardest days of quarantine, and now they do not loosen.

Mobile banking customers, social media users, everyone can fall into traps. Also they centennials, through the attacks that may be suffered by Instagram, TikTok, PlayStation Network or Fortnite, among many others.

“Boys spend more time online. They use the console for everything, not just to play games, They also meet people there. And someone can pretend to be who they are not. In the console, your profile can be stolen, which usually has a credit card number loaded ”, shoots Gabriel Zurdo, CEO of BTR Consulting.

And he adds: “The accounts are sold on the dark web and even in Mercado Libre. Thus, going fishing there is very tempting for criminals.”

Everything has a price on the black market. An Instagram or Facebook account is worth between $ 55 and $ 75, while a Gmail email account costs about $ 150. Regarding the number of followers, for 1,000 of Instagram they pay about 9 dollars and for 1,000 of Tik Tok 15 dollars.

“What is trafficked today is data, which is the digital gold. It doesn’t matter if it’s from credit cards or from a Fortnite account, it’s all data that can be bought and sold, ”says Luis Corrons, from the digital security company Avast. However, it is best to be extremely careful, so that our accounts do not end up on the dark web.

The most common crime on Instagram

The platform for sharing photos and videos is one of the most used networks by adolescents, young people and not so young. And its massiveness makes it one of the favorites of criminals.

The most common crime here is account theft, which can serve thieves for various purposes. The most viewed by analysts is the sale of the profile, which is priced according to the number of followers. Then a broker buys it and can do various things with it.

“The most common is to sell those followers to people who need to have a lot of followers. There are also those who will scam the followers of that account, sending them by direct message an Instagram link (the one who receives it believes that it comes from their contact) where they can ask you for your Instagram password, and since you are right there you don’t even think about it ” , says Corrons.

Anyone can fall into the trap. “Suddenly a message appears that says that one of your photos is in breach of the Copyright Law. Click here to download. If you click, you go to a form where they ask for your passwords and you lost. All in seconds”, Adds Gabriel Zurdo.

How to avoid scams on Instagram

“You should never share your Instagram password with anyone. The social network will never ask for it outside of the profile entry ”, explains Santiago Pontiroli, security analyst at the Kaspersky company.

The two-step authentication can save us. Instagram offers this option. To enable it, within the social network you have to go to Security. There you can configure, as a second barrier to entry, a specialized app, WhatsApp or SMS.

When enabled, when the system detects that the profile was opened from another device using the original password, it will ask to validate it from the second step, that is, for example, from WhatsApp, where it will send a six-number code. Without it, the profile will not open.

Be suspicious of accounts that are private and Direct Messages that ask to click on links.

Although they have different audiences, for criminals TikTok has the same spirit of Instagram: the loot is in the number of followers. “In this service many truchos profiles, who publish photos of half-naked teenagers and tell you, ‘If you want to see more, log in to my Only Fans’, and those who enter there with their credit cards are stolen ”, affirms Zurdo.

Fortnite scams

It is one of the services that have more juice for criminals. There may be credit card data there and, in addition, the game has its own coins (V-Bucks), which are bought for real money and can be resold on the black market. “There are Trojans that steal user credentials. And once they take an account, everything can be sold. Skins, weapons … ”, says Pontiroli.

“Stolen credit cards would be used to buy V-Bucks which are then sold at very low prices to legitimate players browsing the dark web. By doing so, the proceeds are effectively cleaned and the money laundered, further fueling the criminal enterprise. The Fortnite coins sold on eBay have raised more than $ 250,000 in two months. ”Adds Zurdo.

Scams on PlayStation Network (PSN)

Of the four services in this report, it is the one that currently reports the fewest attacks according to those interviewed. However, it is the one that suffered the greatest blow, which forced him, in 2011, to be offline for almost a month.

In that hack they stole the data of some 10 million credit cards. Perhaps that is why the company has a proactive policy, and they usually send emails to their users to activate security in two steps and on the official website they advise to be attentive to unjustified expenses.

Right now PSN reports fewer attacks but it does. “In the forums you see accounts from all platforms for sale”, sums up Pontiroli. It happens that there users have their data loaded and almost all also leave their card number online, because the service is paid.
