Transfer Market 2022: more transfers, but less money in revealing FIFA report | Barcelona, Real Madrid, PSG | FOOTBALL-INTERNATIONAL

More operations but less money in circulation: The number of transfers in men’s professional football increased slightly in 2021 but its financial value is at its lowest point in five years, in the current context of the pandemic of the COVID-19, indicates a report from the FIFA posted this friday. The International Federation counted some 18,000 international movements in the past year, a figure close to the record – reached in 2019 – and 5.1% higher in relation to 2020, the year of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The sums in those movements fell for the second year in a row. Total expenses in this regard reached close to 4.9 billion dollars (4.2 billion euros), “a drop of 13.6% compared to 2020 and 33.8% compared to the record level of 2019.”

“Even though clubs have needed to renew their rosters (…) they were not so inclined to pay transfer compensation, which led to a total global number of transfers that reached its lowest level in five years in 2021”, can be read in the ‘Global Transfer Report’.

As usual, the vast majority of club changes were made without transfer compensation (87.7%). In other words, only 12.3% of the player movements reported by FIFA (2,230) resulted in a financial transaction.

In these payment transfers, the average cost fell significantly in 2021, falling to 300,000 dollars (262,000 euros), figures that are reminiscent of those of a decade ago. The ten largest transfers alone represent 15% of the transaction amounts.

According to the press, the transfer of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku from Italian Inter Milan to English Chelsea for 115 million euros ($ 131 million) is the most expensive registered in 2021 by FIFA (which does not confirm any figures in this regard) , ahead of the pass from Englishman Jadon Sancho (from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United) and the case of Moroccan Achraf Hakimi (from Inter Milan to Paris Saint-Germain).
