U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Bob Menendez took the initiative and, along with 48 colleagues, petitioned the Senate, asking U.S. President Joe Biden to receive Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in a manner befitting the pious.
Patriarch Bartholomew is due in Washington next week, and his visit coincides with the 30th anniversary of his election to the throne of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
“We appreciate the fact that His Holiness is a world-leading advocate for interfaith dialogue and peace,” the senators wrote, congratulating the historic, as they say, act of praying for peace with Pope Francis at the tomb of Christ. in Jerusalem, in 2014, while noting their high esteem and characterizing the Patriarch as an outstanding international leader in environmental issues.
“This visit is an excellent opportunity for our Congress and the Executive to follow in the footsteps of the Ecumenical Patriarch and demonstrate our mutual desire for peace and cooperation.”
