AFC Bournemouth can confirm that midfielder David Brooks has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. “He left the Wales national team last week and after medical examination it has been confirmed that he has Hodgkin’s disease (grade II). As a result, David will undergo treatment next week after an initial positive prognosis.”

Brooks addressed Bournemouth fans directly in a message. “This is a very difficult message for me to write. I have been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease (grade II) and will start treatment next week. While this comes as a shock to me and my family, the prognosis is positive and I am confident that I will make a full recovery and be able to play again as soon as possible. I would like to express my appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff who have treated me for their professionalism, warmth and understanding during this time. I want to thank everyone at the Football Association of Wales, because without the prompt attention of the medical team we might not have discovered the disease. I also want to thank Bournemouth for all the support and help last week.”

“While I understand that there will be media attention and interest, I would like to ask that my privacy be respected in the coming months and I will share updates on my recovery when I am able to. In the meantime, I want to thank everyone for the messages of support – they mean a lot and will continue to do so in the coming months. I look forward to seeing you all again and soon playing the sport I love so much.”

Brooks has already played seven league games this season with Bournemouth, the championship leader. He has 21 caps with the national team and took part as a substitute in the World Cup, where Wales were eliminated in the eighth finals.
