One of the brightest deputies of the last convocation, Natalia Poklonskaya, will not be in the new Duma. The former Crimean prosecutor was appointed by the Russian president as ambassador to Cape Verde. “Komsomolskaya Pravda” tells everything there is to know about this country, which, we are sure, most Russians will not find on the map.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN

Cape Verde occupies a group of islands (10 relatively large and 8 very small) to the west of the African continent in the Atlantic Ocean. Historically they are called Cape Verde Islands. Despite such a great location, it is far from being a holiday paradise.

The islands are of volcanic origin, full of extinct and several active volcanoes. Rocky shores are difficult to access for ships, and a significant (about 16%) part of the territory is occupied not by the jungle, but by almost desert highlands, whose landscapes resemble views from the surface of the Moon.

In total, the country has nearly 600 thousand people.

In the capital of the country, the city of Praia, a century ago, only 21 thousand people lived. But after gaining independence, the people rushed here: to save themselves from poverty and look for a better life for themselves and their families. So, a significant part of the city is built up, to put it mildly, chaotically, and frankly – with slums.

By the way, despite the fact that the islands belong to Africa, there are relatively few blacks here. Most – almost ¾ of the population – are mulattos, descendants of alliances between Europeans and Africans.

AFTER PORTUGAL

Cape Verde is a very young state. It gained independence from Portugal, which ruled the islands almost from the moment of their discovery in the 15th century, only in 1975.

However, the influence of Lisbon is still very strong here. Everyone speaks Portuguese, the names of the inhabitants of Cape Verde are also like the composition of Benfica or Porto. The island state is so close to the former metropolis that 15 years ago its leaders began to seriously discuss the prospects of joining the European Union.

Cape Verde is a poor country, to put it mildly. In the list of countries by GDP per capita, it occupies an unenviable 124 metro. For understanding, it is slightly inferior to Uzbekistan, but noticeably superior to Tajikistan. Russia is 51st in this rating.

Perhaps the instructions from Brussels would help the islanders to correct the imbalances in the economy. Paradoxically, being in the ocean, they do not develop fishing here. No, of course, they catch fish, but, as they say, for themselves. This does not appeal to the branch of the economy. Instead, 70% of the country’s population is employed in agriculture. And it would be fine if agriculture and cattle breeding provided local residents with everything they need, but more than 80% of what is eaten on the islands has to be purchased abroad.

INTERESTS OF RUSSIA

It is clear that in such a country there are not many citizens of the Russian Federation, to put it mildly. But this does not mean that our diplomats in Praya spend time on local beaches – a photo from there flaunts on the main page of our embassy in the republic.

The islands are strategically located in the Atlantic, and their ports are often visited by Russian warships. There is no need to talk about the merchant fleet, this is an ordinary matter.

In addition, our diplomats have established themselves well in the country. For example, Natalia Poklonskaya’s predecessor at the head of the Russian diplomatic mission regularly met with the President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca.

HOME WOMAN OF THE COUNTRY

Perhaps the only native of these islands that the whole world knows about is the singer Cesaria Evora. She does not at all look like pop divas, be it the American Madonna or our Alla Pugacheva. Evora’s music is based on national motives of the Cape Verde Islands, crossed with African traditions and the indigenous Portuguese genre of fado.

Instead of a conservatory education, Cesaria has a colossal experience: to help the family, a girl from 17 years old sang in local taverns, fortunately, her voice is outstanding. She recorded her first studio album only at the age of 43, so that world fame came to her already at an advanced age by the standards of modern show business.

Evora was nicknamed “Barefoot Diva” – because she always performed barefoot. For her, this is a tribute to the memory of a poor childhood. Even after becoming rich and famous, she preferred to go without shoes.

How much Cape Verde loves and reveres their main star, who left this world in 2011 at the age of 70, is evidenced by the fact that her portrait flaunts on a 2000 escudo banknote, and one of the most popular airports bears her name. country.
