To prepare you for Dune 2, we’re giving you this Overview of the death of figures – in fact once spoiler-free only based on the film and once as an outlook with book background knowledge.
The spoiler-free overview before Dune 2: who dies, who lives and who is unclear?
If you are scratching your head after going to the Dune cinema and wonder what happened to certain characters that you didn’t even see in the end, you can use a few Dune explanations here to keep track of what the state of affairs is. The level of knowledge here is that End of Denis Villeneuve’s first Dune movie.
Dune: who lives, who dies, who tells your story?
Who died in the 1st part of Dune?
Dr. Wellington Yueh (Chen Chang) is killed (implied: beheaded) by Baron Harkonnen in Dune after Yueh betrays Leto for his wife, whom the baron has long since murdered as well.
Herzog Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) dies in the Harkonnen attack after betrayal by Dr. Yueh by releasing a poison gas in a false tooth, naked and paralyzed.
Peter de Vries (David Dastmalchian), the Baron’s mentat, dies in Dune from the poison released by Leto.
- Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa) dies, fulfilling Paul’s vision, fighting the Emperor’s Sardaukar elite fighters when he spares Paul, Jessica, and Kynes as they escape the caves.
Liet-Kynes (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) is stabbed from behind in the desert before the ecologist and mediator can report the grievances on Dune to the Landsraad. A sandworm called by a pounder then devours them and their attackers.
- Jamis (Babs Olusanmokun) dies in a duel against Paul, where the Atreides scion has to kill the Fremen as the first person in his life.
The dead of Dune: Yueh, Leto, Piter, Duncan, Liet, Jamis
Who survived the first Dune movie and can come back in Part 2?
Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) survives his duel with Jamis and goes into the desert with the Fremen.
Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) escapes the Harkonnen in Dune with her son Paul.
Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) survives Leto’s fang gas by floating on the ceiling, but has to regenerate (in the mud bath) after the attack on his life.
Glossu ‘Beast’ Rabban (Dave Bautista) is alive and well and, as the nephew of Baron Harkonnen, takes over the coordination of the new reign of terror on Dune.
Gaius Helen Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling) also lives and is now openly on the side of the Harkonnen as the Emperor’s Bene Gesserit.
- Stilgar (Javier Bardem) is alive, but with a broken leadership position after Jessica defeated him and Paul in turn, Jessica’s challenger Jamis.
- Chani (Zendaya) turns out to be a real, living woman after Paul’s visions and leads him with the Fremen into the desert of Dune.
Dune: The survivors are ready for Part 2
Which character fates are unclear after Dune?
Gurney Halleck We last saw (Josh Brolin) during the Harkonnen attack on Dune’s capital Arrakis, when the Emperor stabbed the Atreides troops with his fighters in the back. Gurney’s fate leaves Dune open.
Thufir Hawat (Stephen Henderson), Leto’s Mentat, is sent off by the Duke to find the conspirators who are responsible for the Hunter Seeker attack on Paul – and is no longer worth mentioning afterwards. Dune leaves open what will happen to him.
Dune 2: Who Can Return for the Sci-Fi Sequel?
All of the definite survivors of the first Dune film continue to play important roles. But what about the others? Who neither the 6 Dune books by Frank Herbert * knows, has ever seen David Lynch’s Dune – The Desert Planet or the mini-series, be warned: From here it goes into Spoiler Territory. Now we reveal unclear and astonishing character fate with regard to Dune 2.
Dune: Advisors Gurney and Thufir outlive their Duke
Let’s start with the Dune characters that “disappeared” towards the end: Gurney Halleck survived. We see him last in the fray, but he escapes with a couple of Spice smugglers and joins them after believing the entire aristocratic house of Atreides has fallen.
Letos Mentat Thufir Hawat is captured, but may continue to live. Since Baron Harkonnen has lost his own Mentat Piter, he needs a new “human computer” and thus forces Thufir to serve him.
The biggest surprise for many is likely to be a possible one Reunion with the dead Duncan Idaho be. (If Dune 2 only films the first book to the end, this may not happen until Part 3, in which the events from the second Dune book, The lord of the desert planet *, would be picked up).
Dune won’t let Duncan Idaho go
Because although Duncan Idaho really dies in Dune, he is later restored from dead body cells by the manipulative Tleilaxu and brought back as a so-called ghola: This Duncan is then called Hayt is a Clone with no memorieswho is entrusted to Paul as a dangerous gift. The rest of the dead from Dune are really dead.
What are the new important characters in Dune 2?
Also, if Dune 2 is really being turned on, we should be on 4 new important roles have an eye. Because to cast them in the sequel will be exciting again:
- On the Imperator Shaddam IV. from the house of Corrino, the rulers of the known universe, in Dune there was only talk so far. Part 2, on the other hand, will have to let him play an active role because he plays an important role.
- Princess Irulan, Shaddam’s daughter, was also mentioned in Dune: Paul tells his mother in the desert tent that he has to marry her in order to make himself emperor.
Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen is Glossu Rabban’s younger brother and the second nephew of Baron Harkonnen, who is yet to become important. A gifted arena fighter and duelist, he was iconically portrayed by Sting in David Lynch’s film.
- Alia Atreides is Paul’s little sister, whom he saw in a vision as a baby in the arms of his mother. Her Fremen blue eyes have to do with an exam the pregnant Jessica has to do. Like Paul, she is no ordinary child either.
So it means keeping your fingers crossed that Dune inspires enough viewers and makes a lot of money so that Denis Villeneuve can also implement part 2. The best thing is to just go to the cinema again.
