The global cases of coronavirus during the past week they rose 6% compared to the previous seven days and totaled 3.6 million, of which two thirds (2.4 million) were registered in Europe, the current epicenter of the pandemic, according to data published today by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The weekly rise is the fifth consecutive, although as in previous weeks, Europe is actually the only region where cases increase (11% last week), while these remained stable in America and East Asia and fell in Africa, South Asia and the Middle East.

The Old Continent also registered more than half of the deaths due to COVID-19 last week (29,000 out of a total of 51,000, representing an increase of 6% over the previous seven days).

There is disparity in this indicator, since while deaths in Europe rose 3%, in America the rise was 19%, although the absolute figures were lower (13,000 deaths), while in East Asia deaths rose 29% ( 3,100) and in the rest of the regions there were decreases.

The United States remains the country with the most weekly cases (558,000, a similar figure to the previous week), followed by Germany (333,000 infections, 31% more) and the United Kingdom (281,000, an increase of 11%) .

In the accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic, global cases amount to 257 million, while the deaths are 5.1 million, according to statistics from the WHO.

The delta variant, more contagious, begins to become the only circulating variant: according to the analysis of the GISAID laboratory network, 99.8% of the samples studied correspond to this variant, while only 0.1% are gamma. and less than 0.1% correspond to beta, alpha or other variants.

So far 7.78 billion vaccines have been administered worldwide, with which 53.5% of the world’s population has received at least one dose, although the distribution remains uneven, and in low-income countries that percentage is only 5.2%.
