Will Van Aert have to put away his ambitions for the 2022 Tour? "Our main goal is to bring the yellow jersey back to Paris"

After several weeks of waiting and countless rumors, the route of the next Tour de France was officially announced by Christian Prud’homme on Thursday. A course that does not have a lot of opportunities for pure sprinters but stages perfectly in the ropes of Belgian champion Wout Van Aert: in the wind, on cobblestones or on more hilly profiles. In the first week, the Belgian could even aim for the yellow jersey which had narrowly escaped him this year.

“Can Wout aim for yellow in the first week? There will be some great opportunities for him anyway”, explained Jumbo-Visma training manager Richard Plugge.

Present on all terrains, Van Aert also seems to be a very serious candidate for the green jersey, he who had achieved three successes this year on the Grande Boucle. On the side of Jumbo-Visma, we do not bury this idea: “If Van Aert has the ambition to win the points classification, we will analyze this objective”, explained Plugge.

But Jumbo-Visma’s main goal in 2022 will be to finally bring the yellow jersey back to Paris: “This is our collective goal”, claimed Plugge, “this is the jersey we want to bring back to Paris.”

If he had been given complete freedom on the last Tour following the retirement of Primoz Roglic, it is therefore possible that Van Aert will have to help his leader on the next Big Loop.
