A dozen soapboxes will take their chance in the youth council’s soapbox race on Sunday 26 September. With this he wants to breathe new life into an old tradition. Meet at 2 pm at the bridge in the Sint-Lenaartsebaan.

It has been more than six years since a soapbox race took place in the municipality. The last raft race also took place in 2017. “It had to be canceled in both 2018 and 2019 due to blue-green algae in shipping. Last year there was corona. That is why we have decided to return to the soapbox race”, says Jens Goossens of the youth council.

The last raft race dates from 2017. In 2018 and 2019, it was canceled due to blue-green algae in the canals.

“The intention is to organize such an activity every year, each time in a different district. This year it will be Brecht, next year it will be Sint-Lenaarts.” Unlike in the past, now no ramp needs to be built to allow the soapboxes to race down.

The bridge in the Sint-Lenaartsebaan is used for this. “There is little traffic on this bridge and can therefore easily be closed. Traffic can still pass the bridge in Veldstraat in the direction of Loenhout.”

Youth house Bastion provides the drinks and the Chiro girls for soup and croques. A dozen soapboxes, including some from Westmalle, will participate on Sunday. Anyone who wants to can still register. The race starts at 2 pm, each soap box is checked at 12.30 pm. (she)
